Jane Cleveland rustled the pages of the Daily Leader and sighed. A deep sigh that came from the innermost recesses of her being. She looked with distaste at the marble-topped table, the poached egg on toast which reposed on it, and the small pot of tea. Not because she was not hungry. That was far from being the case. Jane was extremely hungry. At that moment she felt like consuming a pound and a half of well-cooked beefsteak, with chip potatoes, and possibly French beans. The whole washed down with some more exciting vintage than tea.

But young women whose exchequers are in a parlous condition cannot be choosers. Jane was lucky to be able to order a poached egg and a pot of tea. It seemed unlikely that she would be able to do so tomorrow. That is unless—

She turned once more to the advertisement columns of the Daily Leader. To put it plainly, Jane was out of a job, and the position was becoming acute. Already the genteel lady who presided over the shabby boarding-house was looking askance at this particular young woman.

‘And yet,’ said Jane to herself, throwing up her chin indignantly, which was a habit of hers, ‘and yet I’m intelligent and good-looking and well educated. What more does anyone want?’

According to the Daily Leader, they seemed to want shorthand typists of vast experience, managers for business houses with a little capital to invest, ladies to share in the profits of poultry farming (here again a little capital was required), and innumerable cooks, housemaids and parlourmaids—particularly parlourmaids.

Power restored to most of Puerto Rico after massive New Year’s Eve blackout

Power has been restored to more than 98 percent of Puerto Ricans affected by a massive power outage, the US territory’s electric utility said on Wednesday. The power company blamed the New Year’s Eve blackout on a fault in an underground cable, but investigations are still under way.

Power was restored to most of Puerto Rico Wednesday after a major blackout plunged the island into darkness on New Year’s Eve, the US territory’s electric utility said.

Electricity supply had been restored to at least 1.44 million customers, or 98.3 percent of those affected, by noon local time (1600 GMT), according to Luma Energy.

The power company said preliminary findings indicated a fault in an underground cable may have been the cause of the outage, although investigations continue.

Puerto Rico, a Spanish-speaking archipelago, came under US control in 1898 and has faced perennial infrastructure issues, exacerbated by devastating hurricanes and a 2020 earthquake.

The utility company said power had been restored to both of the capital San Juan’s major airports, key water supply facilities and to at least 31 hospitals.

Spokesperson Jose Perez warned, however, that power cuts could continue to affect some areas “as the power plants reach their optimum level.”

Governor Pedro Pierluisi said he had spoken with US President Joe Biden, and had asked for continuing Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) support.

“This is a long and arduous process that requires local and federal collaboration, which is why I requested that FEMA continue facilitating the projects we have begun,” he said in a social media post.

He said Washington had approved a two-year extension for the use of temporary generators that provide the island 350 MW in energy, which will now continue to do so until 2027.

Those generators had been put in place following the impact of Hurricane Fiona in 2022.

Earlier, Luma’s director of external affairs Perez told AFP the fault that initiated the power failure had caused a cascade effect that then led to the general blackout.
